The Blueprint for a Great Pickleball Event

Ted Butler and Carolyn MacNeill of Capital Energy at the Dinks by Design Pickleball Tournament

Team Capital Energy showed up ready for last week’s Dinks by Design Pickleball Tournament, hosted by the Boston Society of Architects and Architecture in Common.

The tournament supported Architecture in Common’s K–12 Design Education programs. These programs give students ages 5–18 across Greater Boston access to a hands-on experience with architecture and design. They are truly building the next generation of architects… and pickleball players.

We had a great time playing and meeting friends and colleagues from the built world. We came away with the coveted BSA trophy – we just know how to build a point.

A few fun things we learned from this event:

  • 🏗️ Every great rally (and building) starts with a strong foundation.
  • 🍳 The rule is to stay out of the kitchen – not to redesign it.
  • 📏 A good third-shot drop is basically structural engineering: correct angle, correct load, perfect landing.
  • 💥 And sometimes the design calls for a smash. We smashed a few pickleballs along the way, in the friendliest way possible. Sorry, not sorry. 😀

Congrats to Cosentini, our formidable opponents in the final. You made us earn every point. And a respectful nod to Payette, who beat us in last year’s final, we’ve been rolling back the film ever since then.

Thank you to the Boston Society of Architects and Architecture in Common for a well-run, really fun event, and especially to Aya Kappel for her work organizing it. Thanks also to Danyson Tavares, Executive Director of the BSA, and David Silverman, Chair of Architecture in Common, for their leadership, and all our fellow participants for their enthusiastic sportsmanship!

See you all next year to support a great organization. 🏓
